About | Mrs. Grace R. Hedges, 89, longtime Walkersville resident, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Record Street Home where she was a resident for nearly three years. She was the loving wife of the late Edward C. Hedges for 62 years, prior to his death on October 6, 2010. Born November 10, 1925 in Walkersville, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Nora Craver Rice. A graduate of Walkersville High School, class of 1943, she served as pianist for the Glee Club and various assemblies while there. Mrs. Hedges received her R. N. Degree, following graduation, from Frederick Memorial (then Frederick City) Hospital, class of 1946. For 22 years, she was an office nurse for the late Dr. J.E. Stoner, Jr., and the late Dr. E. A. Dettbarn, of Walkersville. Grace was a life-time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Walkersville, having been baptized, confirmed and married there. She served as pianist and Sunday Church School teacher for many years. She was a member of FMH Alumnae Association; Maryland State Nurses Assoc.; Walkersville High School Alumnae Assoc.; Glen W. Eyler Post #282 Auxiliary; Walkersville Volunteer Rescue Service; and AARP. Grace enjoyed reading, needlework, crossword and word puzzles. Surviving are her son, Gary E. Hedges and wife, Cecilia, of Frederick; one daughter, Brenda G. Hedges and companion, Marsha Thompson, of Woodsboro; a grandson, Brian E. Hedges and wife, Keesha, of Alexandria, VA; a granddaughter, E. Lauren Larkin and husband, Chris, of Santa Barbara, CA; three great-grandchildren, Luke and Alana Larkin, and Eddie Hedges; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Hedges' life will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Pennsylvania Ave, Walkersville, followed by a time of remembering and refreshment at the Parish Hall. Rev. Mark Foucart will preside. Final resting place will be held privately. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Record Street Home, especially the nursing team for their exceptional care, as well as the compassion and love displayed during our mother's end of life journey.
