About | Harold Lee "Doc" Whitmore, retired East Tennessee State University (ETSU) professor and little league baseball coach in Johnson City, TN, passed away peacefully from complications due to Alzheimer's disease in Frederick MD on August 22, 2013. Born in Gettysburg, PA and raised in Detour, MD, he was the son of the late Sylvester "Doc" and Pauline Whitmore. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Wendy Whitmore and Stephen Tomlinson of Fredrick, MD; daughter Kelley Whitmore of Boston, MA; two sisters, Elaine Marshall of Woodsboro, MD and Judy Nowell of Chattanooga, TN and their families. He is also survived by his dear uncle, Nelson Trout of Woodsboro, MD and many, many Trout cousins. Doc graduated from Walkersville High School in 1957. He earned his Bachelors in Physical Education at Shepherd College and both his Masters and Doctorate of Education in Counseling at West Virginia University in Morgantown. Upon graduation, he served as the guidance counselor at University School as part of ETSU's Department of Human Development and Learning. He became a full professor and was later the Chairman of the Counseling Program. In addition to coaching little league for 37 years, he loved playing golf, attending ETSU basketball games, walking, and keeping up with all levels of sports. A memorial visitation will be held at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville, MD from 3:00 to 5:00PM on Sunday, August 25, followed by a memorial service at 5:00 PM. Another memorial service will be held Saturday, September 7 in Johnson City, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Johnson City National Little League, P.O.
