Harry Clifford Crum Ii Obituary

Graduation Year Class of 1960
Date of Passing Jun 19, 2023
About Harry Clifford Crum II, formerly of Lewistown, MD, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully at his home in Fairfield, Pennsylvania on June 19, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer and kidney disease; he was 81. Harry was born at home on April 11, 1942, to the late Charles and Marguerite (Hildebrand) Crum in Walkersville, Maryland.

After graduating from Walkersville High School in 1960, Harry enlisted in the Navy and proudly served as a diesel mechanic aboard the USS Proteus for four years, being honorably discharged on July 3, 1964, as the youngest E5 Engineman in the Navy.

Harry held various jobs over the years and retired as a flooring salesman from Kehne’s Carpet One in 2004. Harry would go on to enjoy retirement pursuing his life-long passion of fishing, spending countless hours casting a line with dear friends Phil Yost, Richard Krantz, Jerry Crum, and John Patton along with taking annual trips to Chichester, Quebec, Canada to fish on the Ottawa River and surrounding lakes into his late 70’s.

Being a 40-year member of the Yellow Springs Lions Club, Harry was instrumental in setting up a foundation with the proceeds from the sale of the club’s property that will continue to serve Frederick County for many years to come. He coached Yellow Springs Little League baseball for many years, beginning each season by exclaiming “Who’s the toughest boy here?!”, and assigning them to play catcher. Harry was also a long-time member of the Frederick County Fish and Game Protection Club, enjoying weekly meetings and weekend shoots with his club friends. A special thank you to all the club members who visited and provided comfort to Harry in his final days, he loved the club and all of you dearly.

Harry loved watching the Baltimore Orioles, Ravens, and NASCAR along with car auction and restoration TV shows. Harry never missed an opportunity to eat crabs or oysters and especially enjoyed tomato and mayonnaise sandwiches with a cold beer or sweet iced tea. Harry always offered a helping hand, a kind word, and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his grandchildren at their numerous events. One of Harry’s last wishes was to watch his graduating grandchildren walk their respective stages to receive their diplomas. This was made possible by special family friends Mary Crum and Joanne and Jonathan Howe; the family is forever grateful.

Harry is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Donna Eyler Crum of Fairfield, PA; daughter Kara L. Baker and husband Rob of Thurmont, MD; son Keith C. Crum and wife Becky of Fairfield, PA; grandchildren Paige Baker, Morgan Baker, Sydney Crum, and Marley Crum; sister-in-law Connie E. Barnes; brother-in-law John Kent and golden retrievers “Chezney” and “Apollo”. Proceeding Harry in death are his parents Charles and Marguerite Crum, sister Damaris Kent, in-laws Albert and Louella Eyler and brother-in-law Paul Eyler.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses and support staff of Johns Hopkins and Frederick Health Hospital’s, along with Franklin Hospice, for all the care and compassion they showed Harry over the proceeding weeks and months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Harry’s name to Franklin Hospice, 209 Grant Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 23, 2023, from 2:00pm - 4:00pm at the Cortner Community Room located at 5685 Fairfield Road, Fairfield, PA 17320.
