| About | Larry Martin Garber, 75, of Chesapeake City, MD passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Born in Frederick, MD on May 18, 1948, he was the son of Charlotte Smith Gosnell and the late Melvin Martin Garber. A graduate of Walkersville High School, Mr. Garber continued his education at the University of Maryland, and later married his high school sweetheart in 1969 and moved to Chesapeake City in 1971. He began his teaching career at Rising Sun High School, and then transferred to Bohemia Manor High School and continued teaching math and computer science until his retirement in 2006. Mr. Garber exhibited athletic expertise and the love of sports at a young age that developed into years of education and coaching in the Cecil County Public Schools system. Mr. Garber was a member of Cecilton Jaycees, Patriot’s Glen golf course, and a long-lasting member of Grace Rocky Hill Lutheran church in Woodsboro, MD. He had a passion for basketball and golf, having taught his two grandsons the love of the game. Mr. Garber shared his musical talents by playing the keyboard in an Elvis band, singing at the VFW, and always enjoyed playing the piano at family gatherings. As well as unofficial mentoring and touching the lives of so many, his legacy will be one of a truly good man who was dedicated to serving others. He taught us all that kindness, compassion, self-sacrifice, and a sense of humor are what define a person of character. He will be dearly missed. In addition to his mother, survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Gail Strosnider Garber; daughters, Gretchen Vitak (John), Elkton, MD, and K. Nicole Lougheed (Matt), Cecilton, MD; grandchildren, Hunter Tollinger, Megan O’Neal, Halle O’Neal, Colin O’Neal, and Charlotte Lougheed; half-sisters, Linda Garber, and Pam Detrick; stepbrothers, Ross Gosnell, and Andrew Gosnell; stepsister, Deborah Deardorff; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Roy Gosnell; and sister, Judy Bennett. Visitation will be held from 5 PM-7 PM, Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921. Funeral service will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at Hicks Home for Funerals, with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. Interment will be private in Woodsboro, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cecil County Public Schools Scholarship Fund, as it will be used for a scholarship in Mr. Garber’s name at Bohemia Manor High School.
