About | Mr. Mahlon "Mel" Lewis Slagle Jr., 65, of Rosemont, passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Margaret Lloyd Slagle and they were married for 41 years. Born Aug. 9, 1943, he was the son of Laura (Flohr) Stottlemyer of Woodsboro and the late Mahlon Lewis Slagle Sr. Mel was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church. He was a 1961 graduate of Walkersville High School and a member of the Brunswick American Legion. He worked for Ideal Buick, Chevy Chase Chevrolet and Sport Chevrolet for more than 40 years and retired from Sport Chevrolet in 2008. He received numerous Mark of Excellence awards from General Motors and AC Delco. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Sofranko and husband, Eric, of Jefferson; a granddaughter, Erica Hailey Sofranko; a sister, Linda Lochner and husband, Raymond, of Frederick; sisters-in-law, Shirley Sutphin and husband, Fred, of Purcellville, Va., Debbie Whittington and husband, Ronald, of Frederick, Dinah Huffer and husband, Randy, of Rockville; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his in-laws, Melvin (Pet) Lloyd and Mary Jane Lloyd; and a stepfather, Glen Stottlemyer. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 N. Maple Ave., Brunswick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004.
