| About | Mrs. Mary Catharine Crum Smith, 92, formerly of Walkersville and Frederick, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Devotion Assisted Living in Walkersville where she had been a resident since September 2010. She was born February 23, 1919, in Woodsboro, a daughter of the late Frank T. and Pansy Irene Fox Crum. She was the wife of George William Smith Sr., who predeceased her August 4, 2010. They had been married 71 years. She was also predeceased by her mother-and father-in-law, Raymond and Mary Josephine Cutshall Smith, her sisters Pauline Eagle and husband Charlie, Helen Ausherman and husband Earl, brothers Roger and wife Pauline Crum and Henry Crum, sister-in-law Jeanne Cutshall Smith of Woodsboro, brothers-in-law, Robert Smith of Westernport and Ed Drechsler of Westminster. She was a 1937 graduate of Walkersville High School. She worked at the former Shriner Manufacturing Company in Woodsboro and briefly as cashier at Walkersville Elementary School. She and her husband were members of the Woodsboro Dance Club and in their early years followed Big Bands and loved dancing. She greatly enjoyed her son's Woodsboro Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams in the 1950s and 60s. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Woodsboro. Surviving are her son, G.W. Smith, Jr. and wife Patricia Fawley Smith of Walkersville; granddaughter, Leslie and husband Chris Richter, great granddaughter, Charlotte Richter, of Woodsboro, sister-in-law Audrey (Bill) Binkley of Indianapolis, Janet Smith of Westernport, Mary Louise Drechsler of Westminster, Dorothy Crum of Woodsboro, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be fondly remembered by nieces Helen "Susie" Hubbard, Mary Jo (John) Zentz; nephews Vic (Ann) Drechsler and Wayne (Charlotte) Crum, friends Donnie and Pat Smith and Russell and Ruby Brown. A special thank you to former caregivers and friends, Wanda and David Himes, Shanaz and Mark Arshad of Devotion Assisted Living and caregiver Aldith Thomas, Geoff Littrell, R.N., Hospice of Frederick County for their compassionate and loving care of Mom, and the staff at David Wingate Elder Law for their service. Interment services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 23 in Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro; Rev. Dahl Drenning, will officiate. The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S.
