About Milton Renner "Sonny" Smith, age 82, of Thurmont and formerly of Woodsboro, died Friday, January 8, 2016 at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born May 8, 1933 in Libertytown, he was the son of the late Garnetta Smith Lease.
He was the husband of Genevieve West Smith, who predeceased him in 2014.
Mr. Smith was a 1951 graduate of Walkersville High School, where he served as president of his class and later joined the Marine Corps. He and his wife were dairy farmers, then he operated his own business as a ceramic tile contractor, retiring in 2004 after 40 years.
Sonny was an active member of Grace Rocky Hill Lutheran Church, Woodsboro, where he served as president of the council during their remodeling project in 2000 and fried chicken for their festivals for many years. He was a charter member of the Glenn W. Eyler American Legion Post, Woodsboro, where he served as the commander two times and also served as the county commander.
He enjoyed crabbing, hunting, traveling and spending time with his family.
Surviving are three daughters, Cheryl L. Wiles Winters and husband, Alan (Bud) Winters, Wanda K. Routzahn and Melvenia R. Harding, all of Thurmont; six grandchildren, Matthew and Jessica Wiles, Zachary and Lindsay Harding, Ashton Harding, Madison Harding, Lane Routzahn and Landon Routzahn; great-grandsons, Jackson Wiles and Connor Milton Wiles; half-sisters, Alice Wilcom of Walkersville and Sharon Keilholtz of Emmitsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main Street, Woodsboro on Monday, January 11 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm. Members of the Glenn W. Eyler Post will be conducting a memorial service at 7:30PM.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 12, at 11 AM at Grace Rocky Hill Lutheran Church, 10825 Coppermine Road, Woodsboro, with Rev. Charles Frederick and Rev.Gordon Narvesen, officiating.
Interment will follow in Rocky Hill Cemetery.
