About | Nancy Rebecca "Becky" Koontz, 60, of Dataw Island, SC, died Monday, May 19, 2014. Becky was born on April 20, 1954, in Frederick, MD, the daughter of Norman R Koontz and the late Myra Dudderar Koontz. Becky graduated from Walkersville High in 1972 and received her BSE from the University of Kansas in 1975. She received her MLA from Western Maryland in 1980 and a Certification for Secondary Education and Supervision from the University of Maryland College Park in 1983. From 1977 to 1996 she taught English at Walkersville and Catoctin High Schools. She also served as department chair at CHS. From 1996 to 2005 she was the Assistant Principal at Brunswick and Walkersville High Schools. She was the Principal at Walkersville High from 2005-2007 and from 2007 until her retirement in 2010 she was the Director of High Schools for Frederick County Public Schools. Surviving in addition to her father, Norman of Dataw Island, SC, are her husband, Edward H Pyles, one brother, Bill Koontz and wife, Carolyn, of Moneta, VA; favorite brother-in-law, Robert Pyles and wife, Ann, of Frederick, MD; nieces, Stephanie Koontz, of FL and Terrie Pyles of Frederick, MD; nephews, David Koontz of CA and Robert Pyles, Jr of FL. Becky is also survived by her closest friend/sister, Shirley Stevens of Sharpsburg, MD and goddaughter, Carrie Turner and godson, Evan Turner of Hagerstown, MD. Becky was member of the Frederick, MD Civitan Club. She was a lifelong educator who touched many students and fellow educators' lives. Becky was a devoted daughter, wife, sister, aunt and godparent as well as a friend to many who will miss her. She was generous, loving, compassionate, and kind and always willing to help others. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Friends of Hunting Island Sea Turtle Conservation Project (friends-of-hunting-island-sc.org) or the Community Foundation of Frederick (FrederickCountyGives.org) 312 E Church Street, Frederick, MD 21703 for the Nancy Rebecca "Becky" Koontz Memorial Education Scholarship.
