Nanette Louise Carigan Obituary

Graduation Year Class of 1971
Date of Passing Oct 25, 2023
About Coming Soon!
Events Mrs. Nanette "Snippy" Markey, 69, of Frederick passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at her residence. She was the loving wife of Rob Markey for 46 years.

She was the daughter of the late Leo and Nancy Carignan.

Nanette gained early renown for races on her bicycle Jitney, known perhaps only to her as The Fastest Bike in Brigadoon. She went on to hone her leadership skills as a student crossing guard for Walkersville Walkers in middle school, before rising to the heights of Class Clown of the Walkersville High School class of 1971. An English major at Wheeling College and later Hood College, Nanette developed a lifelong love of reading and history. Producer of such classic Markey Family plays as Peter Pan and Hansel and Gretel, Nanette never failed to bring a smile to those lucky enough to spend time with her. When not driving between baseball and soccer practices during her years as a young parent, Nanette found time to build relationships and hound professors for missing grades as registrar at Hood College. Prior to becoming a grandmother, she spent many years as the beloved Aunt Nanny Choo Choo. Even as her health began to fail, she spent much of the last four years volunteering with Friends of Mount Olivet Cemetery, pouring herself into cleaning and cataloguing grave stones in a role that saw her posthumously named Volunteer of the Year 2023 by Preservation Maryland. She was silly and loving to her dying day, and she was fortunate enough to have passed in the company of her husband, sons, and siblings.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons: Josh Markey and wife Emily and Mike Markey and wife Maiko, grandsons; Nicholas Markey and Leo Markey, siblings; Christine Natali and husband Marco, Andrew Carignan and wife Karen and Rosemary Marcellino and husband Rick; numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and dearest friend Carol Markey.

The family will receive friends from 11AM to 1PM, on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. The memorial service will follow at 1:00PM at the funeral home. Reception to follow. Inurnment will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Frederick Health Hospice or the Friends of Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
