About | Ray Clifford Smith, 95, of Walkersville, MD passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, May 4, 2013 with his two daughters by his side. He was the husband of LaRue B. Myers Smith, his beloved wife of 58 years, who preceded him in death in January 2010. Born June 17, 1917 in Walkersville, he was the son of the late John M. and Avie C. Staley Smith. After graduating from Walkersville High School, he left the family farm in order to work at a furniture company in Pennsylvania. After three years, he returned to Frederick County and was employed by the Ox Fibre Brush Company for 25 years, until the company's departure from the area. He eventually retired from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda after 14 years of employment. Ray was an active member of the Maranatha Church of God and also a lifetime member of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company. Mr. Smith loved working outdoors in his vegetable garden and growing crops for his family and friends. He enjoyed vacationing with his family, going to the Baltimore Orioles baseball games, eating steamed crabs, baking homemade bread, making people smile with funny jokes, and making a friend of whomever he met. He will be remembered for his love of life and positive attitude. Ray as well as his departed wife, will be profoundly missed by their children. Mr. Smith is survived by his two daughters, Deborah E. Smith and Barbara L. Smith, both of Baltimore; one brother Ralph E. Smith and wife Catherine, Walkersville; one sister-in-law Doris Smith, Frederick; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Helen V. Clem, Mary C. Flanigan, Amy M. Smith, Ada Frances Smith, and Grace S. Smith; and brothers John H. Smith, Paul B. Smith, Albert R. Smith, Lewis Staley Smith, and Ira R. Smith. The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville on Friday, May 10, 2013 from 2-4PM and 7-9PM where a funeral service will be held Saturday, May 11 at 1PM. Pastor Jerry Price will officiate. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. |
