About | Cape Cod Times April 12, 2000 Bernard Downing, 72 February 1, 1928 - April 10, 2000 Retired Toolmaker Machinist; WWII Veteran; Avid Fisherman SAGAMORE — a longtime Cape resident, died Monday at his home. He was the husband of the late Betty Jean (Meyer) Downing. Born in New Bedford, Mr. Downing was educated in Bourne Public Schools and graduated from Bourne High School. He lived in Bourne for most of his life. Mr. Downing worked as a toolmaker machinist for the Ocean Research and Equipment Co. for many years until his retirement in June 1999. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 188 in Sandwich. An avid fisherman, he was also known as a real "fix it" man. He also loved camping and RVing. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery, Sandwich.
