BOURNE - Clayton E. Campbell, 89, former superintendent of Bourne schools, died Sunday at Falmouth Hospital of complications from a stroke.

Born in Chicopee, Mr. Campbell received a bachelor's degree in 1932 and master's degree in education in 1933 from Springfield College and his CAGS from Boston University in 1955. He taught in Chester in the early 1930s and moved to Bourne as a teacher and coach in 1938.

He served Bourne schools/union for almost 34 years. This period was interrupted for a three-year tour in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 and three years as a driver education promoter with Atlantic Refining Co. throughout New England schools from 1951 to 1954.

Returning to Bourne in 1954, Mr. Campbell was appointed principal of the J.F. Peebles Elementary School, then as assistant superintendent and as superintendent of Bourne, Sandwich, Mashpee and Otis Air Force Base in 1963. He retired in 1972.

After retirement, he was executive secretary treasurer until 1989 of the Southeastern High School Athletic Conference League, scheduling athletic activities for 24 high schools.

He was active throughout his life in various community activities as trustee of the Jonathan Bourne Library, commissioner of the Bourne Water District, member of the Bourne Recreation Committee and Bourne School Committee, and Bourne town auditor.

Mr. Campbell was also a member of the DeWitt Clinton Lodge and Social Harmony Lodge and active in the Bourne Tide Club and U.S. Power Squadron.
