About | Cape Cod Times Jan. 3, 2003 Elizabeth Lacerda, 19, a Bourne High School graduate, died on New Year's Eve, after apparently accidentally driving into Pocasset Harbor. BOURNE - A 19-year-old Bourne woman found earlier this week in a car submerged in the shallow waters of Pocasset Harbor likely died from accidental drowning, according to the state medical examiner's office. Elizabeth Lacerda, a 2001 graduate of Bourne High School, who was home on college break, apparently drove her mother's Plymouth sedan into the icy water some time on December 31. She was a sophomore at UMass Dartmouth, where she majored in marketing. At Bourne High, Lacerda was a cheerleader for four years, became the squad's captain and earned All Star honors at Universal Cheerleaders Association camp. "She was always such a positive person," recalled Angela Timo, who coached Lacerda for four years. "If I talked to her about anything, she'd always find the positive. And the other girls knew they could depend on her." She described Lacerda as exceptionally mature, but also with an almost child-like joy with life a student who earned high grades but was also a passionate fan of Britney Spears. Two shell fisherman noticed her car submerged in the water at about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday called for help. Despite rescue attempts by the Bourne police and fire departments, she was pronounced dead at Falmouth Hospital. |
