History teacher, restaurant owner, gardener, fisherman

Brewster, Gary James Kaser, 65, died April 25 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in North Olmstead, Ohio where he was valedictorian of his 1953 high school graduating class. After high school, he served two years as an Army medic.

He received a bachelor's degree in history from Ohio University, and a master's degree in history through the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Mr. Kaser was married in 1961 and moved to Cape Cod in 1963.

He taught history at Bourne High School and at Otis Air Force Base Middle School through the 1960s.

In 1973, he purchased and operated the Cleaver Restaurant until 1995. During his years of ownership of the Cleaver, Mr. Kaser was proud of the friendships and acquaintances he made and the contributions he made to the community. He spoke often about Friday nights at the bar. He was especially fond of the honor he had in hosting the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps at the Cleaver for the first three years of their visits to Orleans.

Mr. Kaser was an avid cook, gardener and fisherman.

Funeral services were private, but a celebration of Mr. Kaser's life was held at the VFW in Brewster on May 20 from 2 to 6 PM.

Memorial donations may be made to the Gary J Kaser Scholarship Fund, care of Cape Cod Community College Education Foundation, 2240 Iyanough Rd., West Barnstable, MA 02668
