WAREHAM and BOURNE - Wareham, and former Bourne resident, Richard Charles Melcher, Sr. passed away on Monday, January 18 surrounded by his family after his battle with cancer. He was 56.

He was born Richard Charles Melcher on November 22, 1959 in Port Angeles, WA, the son of Loretta (Hubbard) and Roy Melcher. He was the second of eleven children born to this union. At the age of 3, his parents were told that because of a brain tumor that his chance of surviving it was only 2%. He proved them wrong.

He attended Bourne High School and graduated there in 1979. He then joined the United States Navy serving from 1979 to 1983. Among his duty stations was the Little Creek, Virginia-based dock landing ship USS Pensacola (LSD-38).

Richard had a passion for sports and politics, often causing controversy with his love of the Seattle Seahawks, Mariners, and Rush Limbaugh.

Calling hours with the family were held on Tuesday, January 26, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne, MA 02532.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, January 27, at 11:00 a.m., at St. John's the Evangelist Catholic Church, 841 Shore Road, Pocasset.

Burial followed at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial be made in Richard's name to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, c/o UMass Medical School/UMass, Memorial Development Office, 333 South St., Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
