Ryan Patrick Kent of Bourne, a prominent member of the 2004 Bourne High School hockey team that won the Division III state championship, died at home July 22 after a six-year fight with a brain tumor. He was 29.

Mr. Kent started playing hockey in Bourne’s youth leagues and would go on to be considered one of the best ever to play at Bourne High, earning accolades as a Boston Globe All-Scholastic, a South Coast Conference All-Star, and an Enterprise Athlete of the Week.

He played a key role in Bourne High’s first state hockey title.

With the Canalmen and Marlboro tied 2-2 three minutes into overtime of the championship game, Mr. Kent got the puck in the corner and worked it behind the net. He passed to a charging Matt Gilbert, who one-timed the puck past the Marlboro goalie for the dramatic victory, which came one year after the Canalmen fell to Westfield in the championship game.

Mr. Kent also played second base and catcher on the Bourne High baseball team.

He graduated from Bourne High School in 2004 and attended Plymouth State.

In 2004 he went to work as a machinist at Pocasset Machine

Diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2009, he continued working through multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and a round of radiation. He did not stop working until about two months before his death.

“His motto was, ‘Never give up,’” his widow said. “He never let this thing hold him back. He made this thing look so easy.”

Visitation was held at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Boulevard, Bourne.

A celebration of his life was held at the St. John the Evangelist Church, 841 Shore Road, Pocasset.

Interment was in the Cataumet Cemetery
