About Stuart E. Jones Jr.
Obituary
SOUTH FREEPORT -- Stuart Edward Jones Jr., of South Freeport, died unexpectedly but peacefully on Nov. 23, 2011, at Maine Medical Center surrounded by his immediate family. He was 78 years old.

Stu was born on Jan. 1, 1933, and was the only son of Frances Paxson Jones and Stuart E. Jones Sr.

He grew up and was educated in Maryland and graduated with a degree in history from the University of Maryland, College Park. He did graduate work in geography at McGill University in Montreal and received an M. Ed from Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts.

He was very proud of his service as a first lieutenant and member of a flight crew in the United States Air Force.

When he completed his service, he taught history and became department chair at Bourne High School on Cape Cod.

He entered educational publishing and became New England Regional Manager for Rand McNally, Chicago and a Marketing Manager at American Science and Engineering in Cambridge, Mass.

Before he retired he worked as a real estate broker for Vincent Associates in Falmouth, Mass., and in the marine industry in Galesville, MD and South Dartmouth, Mass.

He moved to Maine in 1998 to be in a place Stu and his wife loved, and to be near his two daughters.

He was an active member of South Freeport Church, volunteered at Maine Handicapped Skiing for 15 years, was chair of the Conservation Commission for the town of Falmouth, Mass., and was a Senior Judge of U.S. Sailing.

Stu's greatest passions were sailboat racing and alpine skiing, and he felt he was becoming a worthy golfing companion.

He owned and skippered many boats from one-designs to his favorite Sabre 36 Solstice that he successfully raced for almost 15 years and placed third in its division in the 1987 Marion to Bermuda Race.

He began skiing at Sugarloaf in the 1950s and skied at least 60 days a year at Sunday River for the last 20 years. If he was able to get 'Ten by 10' ten runs in by 10 a.m., it was a very good day. Stu also loved to snowshoe, cross country ski and kayak. His enthusiasm and joy for outdoor activities was extraordinary and infectious.

Stuart E. Jones lived life large and will be remembered that way by his loving wife and daughters and many, many friends. The family is very happy that others will benefit by his gift of skin and bone tissue to the New England Organ Bank.

A service to celebrate his life was held on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. at the South Freeport Church, South Freeport.
