About | Tello Tontini January 30, 1923 - September 23, 2010 Lifelong resident of Sagamore Tello Tontini, 87, of Sagamore died on Thursday, September 23, 2010. Born January 30, 1923 in Sagamore, he graduated from Bourne High School in 1941 and entered the US Navy, serving until 1946. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Card. Since 1984 he and his wife have enjoyed attending the ship’s annual reunion held in a different state each year. When he was discharged from the Navy he became an electrician, employed at the former Roberti Electric Company in Buzzards Bay until 1965. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Local 223, working at various construction sights including the Sandwich Power Plant and various new schools in the New Bedford and Cape area. In 1978 he went to work at the Cape Cod Hospital in the electrical department until his retirement in 1988. When he returned from the service, he resumed playing baseball for the Sagamore Team in the Cape Cod Baseball League. He became one of the top players in the Cape Cod League following World War II. He was named to the All Star Team for each of his seven years, and was twice named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1949 and 1951. He was a two-time batting champion in 1950 and 1952. In 2003 he was inducted into the Bourne Braves Hall of Fame and in 2004 was inducted into the Cape Cod Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a Red Sox fan and also enjoyed the New England Patriots. Mr. Tontini served on various committees including the Upper Cape Vocational School Committee, the Bourne Finance Committee, Bourne Township Committee, and the Sagamore Civic Boosters Committee. He was a member of the VFW Post 1598, the American Legion in Sandwich, Wareham Lodge of Elks and a life member of the Marconi Club in Sagamore. He was the son of the late Giulio and Regina (Cazzulo) Tontini. Visiting hours were held in the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A in Sandwich. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Corpus Christi Church, followed by burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Sandwich. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Corpus Christi Church, 324 Quaker Meeting House Road, East Sandwich, MA 02537-9903 or to the Bourne Fire and Rescue Fund, P.O.
