About | In Memory of Warren Ernest Loring (Bud) July 19, 1923 - April 1, 2013 MONUMENT BEACH Bud Loring passed away very peacefully at the Tremont Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in Wareham on Monday, April 01, 2013 after struggling with Dementia for several years. He was the husband of Thelma Rowe Loring and the late Helen Elaine Loring, to whom he was married for 47 years. Bud was predeceased by his parents, Warren L. Loring and Hattie Bell Loring and sister Beatrice Croke of South Weymouth. He was born in Brockton and brought to Sagamore Highlands at the age of 2 weeks, moved to Monument Beach at the age of 3, and graduated from Bourne High School in 1941. Bud enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in May 1942. He was commissioned as a twin-engine fighter pilot, 2nd Lt. in December 1942. On his 5th mission, he was shot down over the enemy that occupied France in June 1944. Bud escaped and evaded the enemy with the help of the French Resistance after spending 2 months being hidden by various families, and he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for injuries received. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army, Air Defense Artillery, and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1968 after 26 years of service, which included World War II, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Bud retired from Colonial Gas Company in 1989 after 19 years as a Plant Operator. He was a life member of the Air Forces Escape & Evasion Society, serving on the Board of Directors as the Recording Secretary for 12 years. He was also a life member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society and its MA Chapter, The Military Officers Association of America, the P-38 National Association, Bourne High School Alumni Association, The 55th Fighter Group 343rd Squadron, Veterans of Foreign Wars-Post 5988, Bourne, and the Bourne Society for Historic Preservation. He was a member of the Bourne Fire Department, Company 2 Associates for 53 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bourne Historical society, Inc. and mailed to PO Box 3095, Bourne, MA 02532. Graveside services with Military Honors were held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. The family received friends at the Weary Travelers in Monument Beach, as Bud and Thelma met there in July 1991 at the annual dinner meeting of the Bourne High School Alumni Association. |
