About HARRINGTON, Alice C. Age 93, of Fall River, died Sunday, November 7, 2010 in Sakonnet Bay Manor. Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Edward F. and Catherine (Galvin) Harrington, she had been a lifelong resident of the city. She attended the former Sacred Hearts Academy until grade 10 and then attended B.M.C. Durfee High School where she graduated in 1934, and was voted "Most High-minded and Most Promising." Alice entered Pembroke College at Brown University in 1934 and received a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1938. She taught shorthand, transcription, English, and was employment counselor at Campbell Business School in New Bedford for five years. In 1944 she taught social studies at Somerset High School where she was advisor to the dramatic club. In 1948 she received her Masters of Arts from Boston University. In 1948 she became a social studies teacher at B.M.C. Durfee High School. Then she was promoted to guidance counselor, was named Dean of Girls, and became the first woman vice-principal in Durfee history. She then worked at the administration building where she became Director of Curriculum for the Fall River School System grades K-12 before retiring in 1980. After retirement she was active with the Fall River Symphony and was an avid traveler having visited every European country. Alice belonged to many clubs and organizations including, the Catholic Woman's Club, Woman's Club, Friends of the Library, Little Theatre, Blackfriars, Marine Museum, American Association of University Women, Quequechan Club, Fall River Chamber of Commerce, Delta Kappa Gamma, National Teacher's Honor Society, District Nursing Association Board Member for 20 years, Lafayette-Durfee Foundation, and the Durfee Alumni Association Board. She was also a lifelong communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Alice received an award from the Chamber of Commerce for "Outstanding Community Service" and was honored by the United Way for 20 years service. She is survived by three nephews, Honorable Edward F. Harrington U.S. District Judge and his wife Ellen of Needham,MA, John T. Harrington M.D. Dean Emeritus Tufts School of Medicine and his wife Gertrude of West Roxbury, MA and Daniel T. Harrington M.D. of Fall River, fifteen grand nephews and nieces, and forty-six great grand nephews and nieces. She was the sister of the late Katherine A. Harrington, Mary V. Harrington and John J. Harrington.
