About Alfred Ewald Bergmann, 96, of Charlevoix, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Boulder Park Terrace. He was born on April 30, 1927, in Charlevoix, the son of Fritz and Sybel (Cook) Bergmann.

At the age of 17 Alfred left high school to serve his country during World War II in the United States Navy. Alfred was a “Nuclear Veteran” having helped to sail the Japanese battleship Nagato to the Bikini Atoll, he was honorably discharged shortly after witnessing the first in a series of nuclear tests in the region. Upon returning home, Alfred went back to school and graduated from Charlevoix High School. Alfred worked as a lineman for the City of Charlevoix for 36 years and served his community as a volunteer fireman and EMT for many years.

Alfred loved spending time in the outdoors. He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed many other outdoor activities including camping, gardening and mushroom hunting. He was an avid bowler, nearing a perfect game on more than one occasion.

Although he loved to travel, having taken his fifth wheel across American on several occasions, he would always say that he never found a place that could compare to Charlevoix.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bergmann; his parents; seven brothers, Frederick, Robert, George, William, Richard, Eugene, and Charles; and his granddaughter, Kelly Bergmann.

Alfred will be laid to rest next to Betty during a private graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charlevoix Area Humane Society.
