About | Bernice C. Wexstaff, 89, died Friday, October 9, at her Hayes township home. Funeral services were held Monday at First Congregational Church. The Rev. Phillip G. Schairbaum officiated. Internment was at Brookside Cemetery. Born in Marion township, the former Bernice Crandall was the daughter of Loren E. and May (Ward) Crandall. She was a 1917 graduate of Charlevoix High School and later attended Alma College. On October 1, 1921, she married Arthur Wexstaff at Petoskey. They always made their home in Charlevoix. She was associated with her late husband in the operation of Art's Dry Cleaners until the business was sold in 1970. She was an accomplished pianist and played with the Waxstaff Orchestra for many years. She was the author of several children's books and wrote for other publications. In recent years the couple resided in Hayes township. Mr. Waxstaff preceded her in death, August 22, 1986. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, a member and past matron of Charlevoix chapter No. 72, order of the Eastern Star; and member of the Petosega chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mary Brewster Circle of the First Congregational Church, and Charlevoix Historical Society. She is survived by one son, Robert E. Wexstaff of Charlevoix. The family suggests memorials to the First Congressional Church.
