About McCANN, Dale E. - Of Flint, age 98, died Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Genesys Regional Medical Center. Visitation 11.a.m Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. Funeral service will be held at 12 noon Tuesday at the funeral home, Harold Schnieder officiating. Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Fenton Adopt-A-Pet. Dale was born in Petoskey, Michigan on September 6, 1916 and was raised in Charlevoix. He lettered in Basketball for Charlevoix High School, under Coach Ray Kiphee, whose brother, Harry Kiphee was the football coach at U of M. Dale was an avid University of Michigan, Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings fan. He was an excellent swimmer, ice skater and tennis player. Dale worked at his father's bakery, McCann's Bakery in Charlevoix. On July 4, 1942 Dale married Frances Chvatil in El Paso, Texas and they were married for 66 years. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, BTRY @ 602nd AAA Gun BN, during World War II in Normandy, Northern France, Adrennes and Rhineland. His unit always said, "it will be done". He lived in Paris for a year after the War. In 1947, he celebrated his 30th birthday at the restaurant in the Eiffel Tower. He was a life member of VFW 3087, Chevrolet Post. Dale worked for horse stables and was an expert English horse rider. His favorite horse was Peter J. He once rode a horse in Lake Michigan to Fisherman's Island. He retired from Mott Community College at the age of 72. Surviving are daughter, Lynda (Dennis) Church of Grand Blanc; beloved granddaughter, Amanda (Robert) Solwold of Grand Blanc; great-grand twins, Ella and Sophia; step-grandson, Dennis, Jr. (Trisha) Church; step-great-grandchildren, Nikki and Justin Church; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, on July 3, 2008.
