About | DONALD G. CAREY, 75, of Charlevoix, died Friday, March 5, 1999, at the Charlevoix Area Hospital. He was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Charlevoix, son of Thomas Leo and Marion (Emrey) Carey. He graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1943, then served in the U.S. Navy as a signalman aboard the USS Cleveland during World War II. After the war he attended Michigan State University and later graduated from Alma College, where he played basketball and football and was All-Conference quarterback. Don taught and coached in Mason and East Jordan before returning to Charlevoix in 1955 to teach and coach. He was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame and retired in 1985. During the summer months, Don was the third generation of his family to operate Carey & Sons House Painting. .Don was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Charlevoix, senior deacon and life member of Charlevoix Lodge 282 F&AM, member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 72, member of M.EA and member of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association. On May 30, 1950, Don married Joan M. Parsons in Mason and she survives. He is also survived by son, Tim Carey and wife, Stephanie, of Charlevoix: two daughters, Jeryl Anne Stanley and husband, March, of Manchester, Conn., and Marjorie Krinovic and husband, Tom, of big Rapids: Grandchildren, T.J. Todd, Jeremy, Ryan, Madison, Tyler, Mitch, Grier, Blake, Matt: two brothers, Thomas Carey and wife, Esther, and William Carey and wife, Judy: sister Marjorie Coleman, all of Charlevoix, several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Charlevoix Area Hospital for C.A.T scan, or Peggy Carey Northway Nursing Scholarship. |
