Edward K. Shanahan, 86, of Charlevoix, died July 19, 1990, at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 23 at the First Congregatio nal Church in Charlevoix. The Rev. Raymond Griffin will officiate and burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Charlevoix.
Mr. Shanahan was born July 15, 1904, in Charlevoix, the son of Lisle and Mary (Dunham) Shana- han. He grew up in Charlevoix and graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1923. He then graduated from Annapolis in 1927.
He married the former Phila A. Armstrong on Feb. 22, 1930, in Charlevoix.
Mr. Shanahan was a U.S. naval commander, retiring in 1950. During World War II, he was on duty in the Pacific Theater and had served on board the USS Wasp and was captain of the USS Casco.
Following retirement, he returned to Charlevoix and farmed until the early 1970s.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Charlevoix; the Charlevoix Kiwanis; member of Charlevoix Lodge, F.&A.M.; American Legion Leslie T. Shapton Post No. 226; VFW
Post No. 1153.
Mr. Shanahan served as a veteran’s counselor for Charlevoix County. In 1983 he was honored for having served as counselor for 16 years.
He also had served as a member of the board of directors for the First State Bank of Charlevoix and a member of the Camp Daggett board of directors.
He was an area district delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1961 and was a member of the Northern Michigan Beef Breeders.
Except for his tour of duty with the U.S. Navy, he was a lifelong resident of Charlevoix.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dr. Robert E. Shanahan of Toledo, Ohio and Bruce K. Shanahan of Charlevoix; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman Shanahan of Edwardsburg, Mich.
The family suggests memorials to a charity of choice. Envelopes for memorials are available at the Winchester Funeral Home, Charlevoix, where arrangements were handled. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
