About | Eugene C. “Gene” Gibelyou, also known as Gib, age 76, passed away at his home in Traverse City on Thursday, May 21, 2015. He was born on October 31, 1938 in Charlevoix to the late Eugene and Emma (Popp) Gibelyou.Gene married Kay Kamradt on July 1, 1961 in East Jordan. Together they raised 3 wonderful daughters.He served his country proudly as a member of the United States Army from 1958-1964.Gene completed a 5 years pipefitting/welding apprenticeship with Arms & Cole Mechanical Contractors after serving in the Army. He was a member of the U.A. Local 85 of Saginaw for 45 years. Gene worked in many states including, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and in Alaska where he worked on the pipeline at various times from 1976-1984.Gene enjoyed skydiving in his younger years and was also a skydiving instructor. He liked snowmobiling and had raced snowmobiles. Gene restored a Porsche and a 1955 Ford Truck. He flew ultralight planes and even built two. Gene loved hunting and fishing but his greatest outdoor passion was bow hunting.He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 54 years, Kay; his loving daughters, Dawn Gibelyou, Marie (Keith) Leibold, and Chris (Garrick) John; 4 cherished grandchildren; and 2 precious great-grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; and his dear sister, Mary Lou VanLoo, who passed away in November of 2014.A memorial luncheon will be held at New Hope Community Church in Williamsburg on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 1-5 p.m.Condolences may be left online at wolfeoneill.com.Arrangements were made by Wolfe-O’Neill Funeral Home, our family serving yours.
