About | Joseph A. Kortan, 40, of Charlevoix, died May 2, 1987, at Charlevoix Area Hospital. Funeral services were held May 4 at St. Marys Church, Charlevoix. The Rev. Casimir J. Zawacki officiated. Interment was in St. Marys Cemetery, Charlevoix. A rosary was recited Sunday evening at the Winchester Funeral Home, Charlevoix. Mr. Kortan was born Oct. 2, 1946, in Charlevoix, the son of Joseph F. and Rose (Bayliss) Kortan. He lived in East Jordan until the age of 11 years when, following the death of his mother, he came to Charlevoix to live with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Smith. Mr. Kortan graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1966. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea from 1967-69. He was employed by the city of Charlevoix as sexton at Brookside and St. Marys cemeteries. Mr. Kortan was a member of St. Marys Church, the Pere Charlevoix Council No. 7172, Knights of Columbus and Charlevoix Post No. 1153, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his father, Joseph F. Kortan of Charlevoix; his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Smith of Charlevoix; two sisters, Mrs. Michael (Anna) Crain of Charlevoix and Mrs. Harold (Barbara) Lambert of Fort Myers Beach, Fla. The family suggests memorials to the Charlevoix Area Hospital. Envelopes for that purpose are available at the Winchester Funeral Home, Charlevoix. |
