About | Charlevoix Courier Wednesday, February 24, 1999, Page 9 Keith E. Carey, 78, of Charlevoix and Cincinnati, and formerly of Midland, died Feb. 16, 1999, at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. The funeral was Friday, Feb. 19 at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlevoix. The Rev. Margaret Natterman officiated and burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in Charlevoix. Mr. Carey was born March 5, 1920 in Charlevoix, son of Thomas L. and Marion (Emrey) Carey. He played basketball for the Charlevoix Rayders, going to state finals in 1938, the year he graduated from of Charlevoix High School. While attending Alma College, he played on the basketball, football, track and tennis teams. He was the first athlete to be inducted into Alma's Hall of Fame. Upon graduating with a degree in education, served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II as chief petty officer. He also played on the Air Corps basketball team. He then played professional ball The Flint Dow, an early N.B.A team. Mr. Carey coached basketball, football, track and baseball at Midland High School for 20 years. He then served as assistant principal, retiring after 12 years. Keith also managed Charlevoix Municipal Golf Course for 17 years. He was a member of Charlevoix Lodge F&AM 282 and Midland Lions Club. On Nov. 14, 1943. Keith married the former Lois Goldie in Detroit. She preceded him in death on March, 29, 1989. He later married Patricia Fawcett on June 11, 1990 in Cincinnati. Keith is survived by his wife, Patricia Fawcett Carey of Charlevoix and Cincinnati; three daughters, Kitty (John) Marquardt of Houston, Texas, Nancy (Rick) Grunch of Charlevoix, and Amy (Jerry) Russell of Charlevoix; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, Donald (Joan) Carey, Thomas (Esther) Carey, William (Judy) Carey; and sister, Marjorie Coleman, all of Charlevoix. Memorial contributions may be made to Peggy Carey Northway Nursing Scholarship, in care of Charlevoix Hospital. |
