Date of Birth Jun 28, 1933

About Velma Edith May was born on June 28, 1933 (on her father’s birthday) in Petoskey, Michigan. She had one older sister-Lucille. Velma had a cute little dog named Snowball. She loved going to one of the lakes to walk and swim in. She went to school in Charlevoix, Michigan. In 1951 Velma graduated from Charlevoix High School. One of the places she got to visit with her graduating class was Niagara Falls.

She left home and moved in with a minister and his wife during her senior year of high school. After graduating she decided to go to Denver, Colorado by train. Velma lived in a small apartment with her sister and 1 or 2 other cousins. After a bit she moved into her own apartment. Velma worked at AT&T doing some filing and helping put together the phone books.

Some friends suggested to Velma that she join them in going to a dance at Lowry Air Force Base. It was at this dance that she met Virgil Larsen. Virgil drove Velma to a farm near Humboldt, Iowa to meet his parents and brothers. Virgil and Velma got married on September 18, 1954 (after he returned from his military tour in Japan). They lived for a time in Lincoln, Nebraska. After finishing his military service they moved back to Denver where Velma became a wonderful mother to 2 children (Keith and Karen). Velma, Virgil and 2 children lived for 5 years in Lamar, Colorado; 2 years in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and the rest of her life in Littleton, Colorado.

Velma and Virgil got introduced to square dancing after moving back to Denver, Colorado. It became a BIG part of her life for many years. Velma and Virgil held lots of positions with the club “Rollin’Wheels” and made lots of friends. Velma had lots of fun square dancing. She and Virgil were even inducted into the Square Dance Hall of Fame.

Some other fun activities for Velma was going to Bronco games with her daughter Karen. Velma and Virgil did lots of camping and going for drives all over in the Rocky Mountains.

Velma was a wonderful wife, mother and friend. Dearly loved by niece Linda and husband Ira, all of the Larsen family and many square dance friends.

Velma is survived by her husband Virgil, son Keith, daughter-in-law Kaye and daughter Karen.
