Douglas Alton Anderson Obituary

Graduation Year Class of 1965
Date of Passing Jul 09, 2012
About Dr. Douglas Alton Anderson of Springfield, MO, passed away July 9, 2012, at the age of 65. He was born May 28, 1947, in Grand Island, NE. He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Anderson, and his father, Robert Anderson. Survivors include his mother, Shirley Anderson, of Grand Island, NE; sister and brother-in-law Connie and Randall Burton of Holbrook, NE; son and daughter-in-law Erik and Kori Anderson of Lee's Summit, MO; son and daughter-in-law Ben and Alyssa Anderson of Little Rock, AR; and grandchildren Ellie and Karter Anderson of Lee's Summit, MO, and Malia and Charley Anderson of Little Rock, AR. He is also survived by his fiancé, Karma Hellard, of Springfield, MO.

Dr. Anderson graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1973 and was a board-certified pathologist. He was an expert in forensic, cyto and hematopathology, and his medical colleagues voted him "Top Pathologist for the Year in the 417 Area" on more than one occasion. At the time of his death, he was serving as associate pathologist at Cox Health Centers, a position he had held since 2003. He was also deputy medical examiner for Greene County and had served as the medical director of the Select Specialty Hospital in Springfield since 2009. Prior to his position at Cox Health Centers, he worked as a pathologist at St. John's Regional Health Center for 21 years, was a consultant for the United States Federal Medical Center for 19 years, was a consulting pathologist for Skaggs Community Health Center for three years and was medical director of Trilakes Cytology for one year.

Dr. Anderson loved trains, fly fishing and spending time with his four grandchildren, whom he adored and was planning to take to Disney World this winter. He was known for his brilliant mind and his witty sense of humor. Friends and family would often call him for medical advice - or advice about most anything. He was described by many as a "walking encyclopedia." Whenever his sons asked him a question, his response was often an acronym that they then had to decipher in order to get their answer. His breadth of knowledge, vast experience and ever-present willingness and ability to help others will be sorely missed by all who knew him, both personally and professionally.

A private memorial will be held at a later date. Online condolences can be made at www.gormanscharpf.com. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Logan-Rogersville School District's Care to Learn Program, 100 E Front Street, Rogersville, MO 65742.
