Sumner Eugene Ruggles, Jr. was born April 17, 1916, in Gorham, New Hampshire, the son of Sumner Ruggles Senior and Alice (nee Morse) Ruggles. He had one sibling, his older sister named Athlene. He attended local schools: kindergarten through Grade 12 in the Libbie Edward School and was graduated from Gorham High School in 1935 .In1941 he enlisted in the United States Army and was deployed to Italy via St. Louis, Missouri. While in St. Louis, he met, courted and married Margaret Hattie Dies, a local school teacher. His new family-in-law included Margaret's mother and father (Hattie and Gustav Dies), Margaret's siblings: sister Anne, brother in-law Andy, brother Gus, sister-in-law Violet, neice Betsy. Their first child, Anne, was born during his deployment. Upon his return to St. Louis, the little family of three traveled to N.H. to spend time with his birth-family which included his father Sumner Sr., mother Alice and older sister Athlene. |
