Brian "Maynard" Welsh, 51, of Hamilton Square passed away on Sunday. Born in Trenton, Brian was a lifelong area resident and graduate of Our Lady of Sorrows School, Steinert High School, class of 1976, and Rider University, class of 1980. Brian was a teacher at West Windsor Plainsboro South High School, and during his 30-year career, taught social studies and coached the boys varsity soccer team. In addition to being the successful and beloved coach he was, Brian was also involved in many facets of the school, which included serving as the unofficial teacher mascot. He was an important influence in the lives of the students he taught and coached. Brian spent a lifetime loving the game of soccer, from playing on a state championship team in high school, a successful Division 1 team at Rider, to coaching his son and daughters in recreational soccer. His genuine passion for soccer, for teaching, for family, for friends and life, made him a special "son" of Hamilton Township and Mercer County. He was an active parishioner of St. Gregory the Great R.C. Church and a longtime member of the Hibernians. An avid Oakland Raiders fan, Maynard was a fixture in many local establishments, cheering for his favorite team. A beloved father to Kelly, Ryan, Mollie, Kendall and Shannon, Brian wore many hats in life, but was most proud to wear the one of fatherhood. Son of the late Walter Henry and Alice (Slover) Welsh, he is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Welsh; his children, Kelly, Ryan, Mollie, Kendall and Shannon; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy and Randy Hanenberg, and Alice and John Andres; his brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Carol Welsh; his former wife and longtime friend, Anne C. Woodrick, mother of Kelly, Ryan and Mollie; his nephews, Christopher, Kyle, Maxx and Zack, and special aunts, Ruth's McDowell and Burchell. A memorial service will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, with prayers at 6 p.m. at St. Gregory the Great R.C. Church, 4620 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kendall, Shannon, and Mollie Welch College Fund, c/o Wachovia Bank, 1177 Rt. 33, Hamilton Square, NJ 08690. |
