George J. Murphy, Jr., 88, of Hamilton, passed away into God's loving arms on Saturday August 4, 2012 at home. Born in Trenton on December 11, 1923, he was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Murphy was a career educator. He was a graduate of Trenton Catholic High School, Seton Hall University, Denver University and Columbia University. He taught school in Denver Colorado and Hamilton Township. He was Principal of Hamilton High School West, Superintendant of Lakewood Township Schools and retired as Superintendent of the Florence Township Schools. He was recognized for his outstanding service in the field of education by the Burlington County Schools. Mr. Murphy was a World War II Veteran. He was awarded with the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars. He was an avid tennis player and was a member of the Kuser Tennis Association and the U.S.T.A. He was nominated Man of the Year by the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Eucharistic Minister for St. Raphael-Holy Angels Church.
Mr. Murphy was a beloved husband and father. Son of the late George and Mary O'Loughlin Murphy, father of the late Shelia, Patricia, and Peter, brother of the late Mary Ann McKee , he is survived by his loving wife of 63 years; Margaret Peterson Murphy; and his children; George J. Murphy III and his wife Elise; of Fairfax, Virginia, Maureen Richardson and her husband Thomas; of Hamilton, Christine Pringle; of St. Augustine, Florida, Philip J. Murphy; of Hamilton, Paul M. Murphy; of Hamilton, Margaret A. Murphy; of Hamilton, and Thomas A. Murphy; of Boca Raton, Florida; one brother; Jack Murphy; of Trenton; eight grandchildren; Katherine Jagger; Michael Murphy; Elizabeth Murphy; Daniel and David Richardson; Riordan and Drew Pringle; and Evan Langan; one great grandson; Levi Jagger; brother-in-law; Joseph Peterson; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Vincent and Mary Ann Peterson; many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed.
The Funeral will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday (Aug. 9) from the Buklad Yardville Memorial Chapel, 30 Yardville-Allentown Road in Yardville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at St. Raphael's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the memorial chapel.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, 34th and Civic Center Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19104.
