| About | Nicholas Peter Maggio Sr. Obituary Nicholas Peter Maggio Sr., known to many as "Pete" or "Pete the Lifeguard", formerly from Somers Point, passed away on Sunday October 13, 2024 at the age of 81 in St. Augustine, Florida, surrounded by his family. Pete was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 14, 1943 to Marie Rizzo Maggio and Peter R. Maggio. Pete was the first quarterback at Mainland Regional High School and was part of the first graduating class. He went on to further his education in Special Education, graduating from Glassboro State College. Pete taught in various schools throughout his career, retiring from the EHT school system on December 31, 2004. Teaching wasn't his only career. He had a second one, lifeguarding for the Atlantic City Beach Patrol. His beach was Raleigh Avenue and he became "Pete the lifeguard" to his beach family for nearly 40 years. Many mornings he would arrive early so he could jump on his surfboard and ride the waves before the beach opened for the day. The ocean was his first love, until he met his soul mate Sue, who was introduced to him through a mutual friend. They were married the following year, celebrating their 39th anniversary this year. Pete was predeceased by his mother and father, Marie Rizzo Maggio and Peter R. Maggio, his brother Joseph Maggio, and his granddaughter Keilani Maggio. He is survived by the love of his life, Susan G. Maggio of St. Augustine, Florida, his sons, Matthew Holibaugh and his wife Melanie of St. Augustine, Florida, Richard Holibaugh Jr and his wife Lisa, from Pearl City, Hawaii, as well as Pete's sisters in law, Catherine "Casu" Grove of Mesa, Arizona and Barbara Maggio of Florida. Pete also had six beautiful grandchildren whom he was so proud to be called Papi by and whom he loved dearly. We can't forget to mention his dear friend throughout his lifetime, Gary Israel. Thank you for the memories. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 19th starting at 6 PM followed by a service at 8 PM at the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home in Linwood. The next day, Sunday July 20th, there will be a paddle-out to scatter Pete's ashes held at Raleigh Avenue beach in Atlantic City starting at 6:30 PM. All are invited and encouraged to wear beach/Hawaiian attire. Donations in Pete's memory can be made to Autismspeaks, org. |
