About | PORTLAND — Dayetta F (Wood) Austin, 65, of Portland, N.Y., passed away on Friday, July 7, 2023, at St. Vincent’s Health Care Center in Erie Pa. surrounded by her loving family. Dayetta was born in Dunkirk, N.Y., on July 3, 1958, the daughter of Elaine Fletcher and the late Dennis Wood. She had been a resident of the area most of her life. She was a graduate of Brocton Central School and had worked for Walmart as a sales associate for the past 26 years, best known for her extreme expertise in the sewing department. Dayetta made many friends of her fellow employees and customers. She loved to play with children and always tried to give a kind smile and enjoyed helping everyone even though she was hurting and sick for many of her final years. She enjoyed crafts and making scrapbooks for every occasion. Dayetta always had a positive attitude and would not give up on life. She is survived by her loving husband Joseph L. Austin, her son Rodney Austin and her daughter Sally Austin, all of Portland, N.Y., her mother Elaine Fletcher Wood of Stockton, N.Y., one brother Bruce (Tina) Wood, five sisters: Carol (Late Richard) Kennedy, Christine (John) Yonkie, Lyaine (Sam) Spauling, Terry (Dan Culligan) Spinler and Glenda Wood. A celebration of Dayetta’s life will be held at the Stockton Community Church, 4554 Railroad Ave., Stockton, N.Y., on Tuesday evening, August 1, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, PO Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240, or to the Lakeshore Humane Society, 431 East Chestnut Street, Dunkirk, NY 14048.
