Benjamin Travis Terrell, 64, died on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at his home. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church with Father Thomas Fraser and Father Steve Rice officiating.

Mr. Terrell was born on November 12, 1946, the son of Warren County natives Charles Lee Terrell Sr. and Ethel King Terrell. Mr. Terrell graduated from Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh.

He received a B.A. degree in history from East Carolina University, an M.S. degree in history from Appalachian State University and an Ed.S. degree from East Carolina University.

Mr. Terrell began his career as a high school history and German teacher at John Graham High School in Warrenton, where he served for four years. While there, he served as the advisor for "The Warrentonian" yearbook.

He became the youngest high school principal at the time when he was named principal of Scotland Neck High School. He designed the curriculum and established high schools at South East Halifax County High School and Warren County High School. In addition to designing the curriculum at Warren County High School, Mr. Terrell also was the school's first principal. He was so proud of the school, the students and the faculty.

While residing in Warren County, he also served as a member of the Vestry at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Warrenton.

Mr. Terrell served as the principal at East Davidson High School for 14 years before being named the director of student services for the Davidson County Schools, a position he held until his retirement in 2010.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Jane C. Bowser; daughters, Jennifer R. Terrell, Eleanor F. Terrell, Emily T. Brown; and son, Benjamin T. Terrell II; as well as his first wife, Susan C. Terrell; granddaughter, Baylee W. Brown; brother, Charles Lee Terrell Jr.; and step-dog, "Mocha."

Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Hospice of Davidson County, or Warren Plains Baptist Church. The family requests that you raise a glass in Ben's honor.
