About | Laverne Millicent Lewis, 92, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on September 29, 1931 in Geneva to the late Lloyd "Slim" and June (Reed) Sprague. Laverne lived in the area most of her life and graduated from Geneva High School in 1949. She was very proud to be on the team that won the conference championship in Women's Basketball while in high school. She adored horses and attended three horse riding academies in her younger years. Fritz, Prince, Funnyman, Buck, and Chief were a few of her favorites she cared for over the years. Always a hard worker, Laverne had been employed with DIY, Stambaughs, and Premix over the years as well as serving as a bus driver for the Board of DD and with Community Action as a delivery person for meals on wheels and providing chore services for seniors. Truly a character, she enjoyed bailing hay and flower gardening. She was a "crazy cat lady" but deeply loved all animals. Her love of Gene Kelly led her to have all five of her children take tap dance lessons. She also enjoyed music especially country music, Frank Sinatra and "The Rat Pack", and John Denver. Aside from her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, John Lewis, who she lost in infancy; granddaughter, Tricia Ann Lewis; nephew, Jeff Rand; sister, Linda Stern; and her former husband and father of her children, Albert Irving Lewis. Her survivors include her children Linda (Larry) Cole of Geneva, Gene (Debi Hendren) Lewis of Ashtabula, Deborah Lewis of Ashtabula, John (Katie) Lewis of Geneva, and Lori (David) McKenna of Bellevue; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including her great-grandson, Drake Lewis who was one of her caregivers; siblings, Louise Ebitino and Kathy Rand of Ashtabula, and Austin "Buddy" Evans of Conneaut; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, including Sean Rutz and Heather Rand whom she was especially close to. |
