About | Carmela Haley, 88, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2012, at St. Charles Mercy Medical Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Carmela was born on May 10, 1924, in Curtice, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes (DeLuca) Portale. She was a 1942 graduate of Genoa High School. She was employed at Lorenzen Coal in Curtice and The National Mill in Toledo. She enjoyed working at the Lion Store and she was a Postal Clerk at the US Post Office in Curtice for over 11 years. She really enjoyed this job. Carmela served as the Mother's Club Treasurer for Jerusalem Grade School and was a member of the Cardinal Stritch Biretta Club. She also served as a member of the St. Vincent's Auxillary. She was a volunteer at St. Vincent's, both in the gift shop and in the hospitality center. She was a lifelong member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church, where she served as a lay communication distributor and a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a loving wife to Jack and devoted mother to Mary Ann, Barbara and Pamela. Carmela was a great homemaker and fabulous cook, especially known for her Italian dishes. Carmela married John V. (Jack) Haley, April 20, 1949, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Oregon, Ohio. Jack preceded her in death on January 21, 1996. She is preceded in death by her parents, Agnes and Joseph Portale, her brother, Sam Portale, and sisters, Jane Haley and Theresa Meyer. Surviving are her daughters, Mary Ann (Gary) Schnee, Barbara J. Haley and Pamela S. (Martin) Strassner; seven grandchildren, Derik (Amber) Schnee, Jeremy (Kimi) Schnee, Laura (Francis) Wright, Rachel Strassner, Martin Strassner III, Erica Strassner and Jacqueline Strassner; three great-grandchildren, Luke, Nathan and Jesse Schnee; brother-in-law, James Haley; sister-in-law, Rita Haley. Carmela was best known for her beauty, kindness and generosity. Our lives have been blessed with her love. Friends may call at Hoeflinger Bolander Funeral Home, 3500 Navarre Ave., Oregon, OH, on Thursday, November 8, 2012, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., where scriptures service will be held at 6:30 p.m. and on Friday, November 9, from 2:00-8:00, where a rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, November 10 and proceed to St. Ignatius Catholic Church for her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
