Helen L. Niehousmyer, 96, of rural Genoa, Ohio, died Friday afternoon, August 29, 2014, at the Genoa Retirement Village. She was born June 25, 1918, in Genoa, Ohio, to Grover E. and Mabel A. (Emmerich) Niehousmyer. Helen walked 1 3/4 miles to attend a one-room country school at Packer Creek in Clay Township for her first four years of school until the local country schools were consolidated. She then attended and graduated from Genoa High School and earned her Associate Degree in 1938 and her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Bowling Green State University in 1943. At B.G.S.U. she was twice honored by being chosen a Jennings Scholar in 1968 and 1971. Helen taught school, spanning 44 years: beginning with Williston School from 1938-39, 5th-8th grades; Oregon Schools from 1945-47, 6th grade at Coy Elementary; and at Genoa Schools from 1939-1956, grades 3rd, 5th and 6th grades at Camper Elementary, and 1956-1982, 5th grade at Brunner Elementary. After her retirement, she volunteered as an aide at the Brunner School library for 12 years. Her memberships included the B.G.S.U. Alumni Assoc., the Ottawa County Retired Teachers Assoc. and the Ohio Retired Teachers Assoc., as well as the Genoa Area Senior Citizens and the Ottawa County Historical Society, serving as a trustee for six years. Helen loved to travel and visited 46 of the 50 states, Canada and a tour of Europe. Helen is survived by her sisters, Edith C. Niehousmyer and Grace H. Niehousmyer, both of Genoa. Her parents, and brother, Myron S. Niehousmyer, preceded her in death. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Saturday, August 30, 2014, at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa. The funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m., Sunday, August 31, 2014, in the funeral home with interment to follow in Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa.
