Joseph G. Schmuhl, age 84, of Monclova, Ohio passed away peacefully with his family by his side on February 28, 2013. Following graduation from Genoa High School, Joe married his high school sweetheart Virginia Byers and went on to serve his country in the Army Reserves where he became Master Sergeant in the 148th Infantry during the Korean War. "Mr. Joe" as he was affectionately known, was a hard worker and a man of many means. He was a self-employed masonry contractor having built numerous apartments, houses and commercial properties throughout the city. Following his semi-retirement he went on to found Fairway Charters, which later merged with Lakefront Lines Charters and Tours. Joe and Ginny's love of family resulted in numerous occasions over the years to entertain and celebrate life. They shared a love of boating and vacationing in their winter home in Florida. Joe was an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of Toledo Sailing Club since 1958. He also was a member of Maumee River Yacht Club and served as Commodore. Mr. Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Virginia (Byers) Schmuhl; along with their children, Susan, Michael (Leslie) Schmuhl, Patricia (Jimmy) Layton, and Linda (Troy) Whitzel. Also surviving is his brother, Alvin (Shirley) Schmuhl, and grandchildren, Eric (Anna) Layton, Kelli Layton and Gabrielle Whitzel. Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn, and sister, Barbara. Visitation for Mr. Joe will be Sunday, March 3, 2013, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with his family giving the eulogy at 7:00 p.m. at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave. A brief prayer will begin at the funeral home on Monday, March 4, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Highland Memory Gardens in Waterville, Ohio.
