About | Susan M. (David) Hanely, 40, of North Manor Drive, Genoa, passed away early Friday morning September 28, 2012, at home following a brief illness as part of a five and a half year battle with colon cancer. Susan was born on August 28, 1972, the only child of Thomas P. and Dolores M. David who both survive. She was always the perfect daughter: caring, thoughtful, loving, and fun. Susan was the devoted and loving wife of Chad M. Hanely, married on June 26, 1999. Chad survives along with their nine year old son Brad who called her "the best mom ever". She is also survived by an aunt, Margaret E. Peterson, Oregon, Ohio; great aunt, Josephine E. Wohn, Genoa, Ohio; great uncle, Milton D. (Margaret) David, Brockport, New York; and many cousins. She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Paul A. and Alice C. David of Genoa and her maternal grandparents, Carson and Bertha M. Peterson of Toledo and many great uncles and aunts. Susan graduated with honors from Genoa Area High School on June 10, 1990. She was vice president of the National Honor Society and a member of the marching, concert, and pep bands. She played clarinet, trumpet, and piano. Susan was also a track and cross country star winning the District 1, 600 meter championship in 1989 and holding the school records for the 1, 600, 3, 200, and 5, 000 meters for ten to fifteen years. She won the Ottawa County Track Meet 1, 600 meter run in 1989 and the 3, 200 meter run in 1989 and 1990. In 2001 Susan was elected into the Genoa Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Susan was on the Dean's list all four years and graduated summa cum laude from Hillsdale College on May 14, 1994, with a degree in elementary education. She was treasurer of Women's Council and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honorary. Susan was 1994 President's ball queen. She was also a 4 year letter winner in indoor and outdoor track as well as cross country. In August of 1998 she obtained her masters of education degree at Bowling Green State University. Mrs. Hanely was a wonderfully dedicated third grade teacher for seventeen years at R.C. Waters elementary school in Oak Harbor, Ohio. Susan and her family are grateful to the Board of Education, administration, and staff for all their kindness and consideration shown them over these last five and a half years and especially to all of her fellow teachers and administrators who have donated sick days when Susan needed them on several occasions. Susan was an avid sports fan, particularly of the University of Michigan. She held football season tickets for more than twenty-five years and also followed the basketball, hockey, softball, and baseball teams with her husband Chad. She also followed the Detroit Tigers and her high school Genoa Comets. Mrs. Hanely was a lifelong member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Genoa. She was baptized in 1973, confirmed in 1986, and married there in 1999. She was currently serving on the Elder Life Board. The family especially wants to thank doctors Garth Phibbs, Joseph Sferra, George Pipoly, William Horvath, Patricia LoRusso and all the chemotherapy nurses at Hematology Oncology in Lambertville, Michigan and at Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan. Services will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, in St. John's United Church of Christ. Visitation will be in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home 501 West St. Genoa, Ohio, 43430, Sunday, September 30, 2012, from 2-5 PM and 6-8 PM and Monday, October 1, 2012, from 2-5 PM and 6-8 PM.
