John Scott Cartwright Hammond, age 66, of Upper Arlington, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2016. John was born in Columbus and grew up in Granville, son of Mary Lee Hammond and the late Robert Cartwright. Also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents John and June Laird, and brothers Edward and Louis Hammond. John graduated from The Ohio State University where he earned a BA in Education and Masters in Physiology. While at OSU, John was a championship runner who was a four year member and two year team captain for their track and cross country team. He worked as a high school English and History teacher at Whitehall, Wapakoneta, and various schools within the Hilliard school system throughout his career while also coaching high school track and cross country. After retiring in 2004, John served several years as a volunteer coach at Ohio State. He was instrumental in convincing OSU officials to erect a statue of Jesse Owens outside the track stadium that bears his name and also gave its memorial speech during the dedication ceremony. John was a member of the Varsity "O" Alumni Club, Granville High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Ohio Archeological Society. A lover of history, John was instrumental in the re-dedication with the Civil War Memorial in Jerome Township. He enjoyed traveling and seeing new places, reading about history or biographies, and loved all kinds of music. Most of all however, John's passion was running and running and more running. He was truly a brilliant man who was kind, loving and always treated others with great tenderness. He will be greatly missed by his beloved of 20 years, Patricia Dawson; loving daughters, Lois (Bela) Bernhardt and Irene (Mark) Mitcheson; children of the heart, Jonathan (Cinda), David (Michelle), and Kendra Dawson; grandchildren, Eli, Owen, Abigail, Eva, Marissa, Ada, Jack, Mira, Logan, Erynn, Lexie, and Bryce; mother, Mary Lee Hammond; siblings, Margaret (Jerry) Burchard, James Cartwright, and JoEllen (Harvey) Campbell; and many other extended family members and dear friends. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 15, 2016 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., where family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Maple Grove Cemetery, Granville, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made in John's name to Hilliard Darby High School Cross Country Program, 4200 Leppert Rd., Hilliard, Ohio 43026.
