About | HOWLAND - Tammy Sue Johns, 42, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at her residence following a courageous fight with an extended illness. She was born July 13, 1969, in Youngstown, the daughter of Kathleen Holly and the late Larry Johnston. Tammy was a graduate of Howland High School. She worked with MedStar EMS as a dispatcher and then as a paramedic. While working there, she went to school to obtain her nursing degree. Once she received that degree, she worked in the St. Joseph emergency room, first as an afternoon supervisor and most recently as a trauma coordinator. She was truly compassionate with her patients, as she enjoyed caring for others. Tammy loved the nursing profession and was proud to be an employee of Humility of Mary Health Partners. Her true passion was her children. She loved spending time with both family and friends. She had a real zest for life, enjoying music, dancing and shopping. Tammy had the gift of hospitality, and loved to open her home to her family and friends. Tammy is survived by her mother, Kathleen (Jim) Clark of Howland; two children, Kenley Christine Johns and Ethyn Michael Johns, both at home; three godchildren, Giana VanValien, Gavin VanValien and Britany DeFrances; and a sister, Chrissy (Michael) VanValien of Cortland. Preceding her in death were her father, Larry Johnston; and her grandfather, Michael Holly. Services will be held for Tammy at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, where the Rev. Ken Bachofsky will officiate. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Howland Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that material contributions be made to Relay for Life in her memory. |
