James Michael “jimo” Adams Obituary (1949 - 1970)

Graduation Year Class of 1967
Date of Birth Mar 01, 1949
Date of Passing Nov 14, 1970
About James Michael "Jemo" (pronounced Gee-moe)Adams, from Mansfield, OH, a senior and a guard for the Marshall University Football Team, died in a chartered jet airliner crash.

He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Hysen (stepfather) and Georgene Selman.

He had a daughter who was born a week after the crash, on the day that he was buried. Her name is Patty Smith. He and Patty's mother were very young and knew it would be best to put their baby up for adoption. She searched for years, finally finding her roots in 2002 and met Jim's parents and then her birth mother. Since then, they have grown to know and love one another and Patty is getting to know her birth father through them. The families now share a wonderful relationship.

Southern Airlines Flight 932, left Kinston, North Carolina, at 6:38 p.m., carrying the Marshall University football team, coaching staff and fans to Huntington, West Virginia. The weather conditions were poor, mist and light rain with broken clouds. The plane descended below the Minimum Descent Altitude, striking trees on a hillside about one mile from the runway. The plane then crashed and burned. All 75 passengers on board were killed.

God bless you and the loved ones you left behind.
Events On a rainy hill side in Wayne County, West Virginia, the lives of 75 people were lost in the worst single air tragedy in NCAA sports history. Among the losses were nearly the entire Marshall University football team, coaches, flight crew, numerous fans, and supporters. The event marked a boundary by which an entire community would forever measure time... before or after "The Crash". This site is a memorial to the lives that were lost on that evening; to honor those men and women who made a mark in the hearts of a school, a community and a nation.
