| About | Alice Jean nee Mizer Stewart , 63 29 May 1948 - 25 Feb 2012 Marion L Steele High School - Class of 1966 "Alice Jean Stewart, 63, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, February 25, 2012, following a 10 year battle with cancer. Alice was born May 29, 1948 to the late Allen and Dorothy Mizer, living in Amherst since early childhood. A graduate of M.L. Steele High School in 1966, she graduated with a teaching certificate from Baldwin-Wallace College. Alice taught Spanish and French at Steele High School in Amherst, until her retirement. She served as advisor to the yearbook and ski club for many years. Alice found great pleasure in gardening, serving as President to the Amherst Garden Club in 2010-11. She championed hiking and traveling with her husband, Ray, especially in mountains and throughout Mesoamerica. An avid environmentalist, Alice belonged to the Sierra Club, leading service trips in the Rockies and the Sierras. Locally, Alice volunteered for the LC Metroparks, the Oasis Animal Shelter, and the friendship APL. A hopeless dog addict, she rescued all her pets. She was also a gifted musician, playing piano, guitar, saxophone and, especially as vocalist. In her youth, Alice was a Girl Scout, attending the national roundup in Idaho and later served as a Girl Scout leader. She was a fitness leader, teaching aerobics and backpacking at LCCC. She enjoyed skiing, both down-hill and cross-country. She is survived by her husband, Ray; son, Jeremy; daughter, Melanie; and many beautiful grandchildren. There are no funeral arrangements or services. We will have an open house at home Saturday, April 14, 2012.
