About Larry W. Burnell, 35, formerly of Edison, died Monday, June 4, in Houston, Texas, following an extended illness.

Larry was born in Mt. Gilead on January 9, 1955 to Lawrence and Marian (Mellott) Burnell who survive in Edison. He was a 1973 graduate of Mt. Gilead High School and received his degree from Bowling Green State University in 1977. He was named one of the “Outstanding Young Men of America” in 1978.

Larry was a Decca teacher for three years at Sandusky High School prior to moving to Texas. He then taught for eight years at the Fort Bend Career School in Houston, Texas. In 1988, he was named the Business and School Coordinator for Sugarland Schools in Houston.

At the time of his death, in addition to his parents, he was survived by one brother, Dennis Burnell of New Bremen; two sisters, Patti Stansberry of Edison and LuAnn Bloomfield of Mt. Gilead; paternal grandmother Mary Burnell of Mt. Gilead; and his maternal grandmother Verne Mellott of Edison.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, June 13, at 1 p.m., in the Denmark United Methodist Church, by Pastor Mary Lou Gompf. Burial was in Bryn Zion Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Craven Funeral Home in Mt. Gilead.
