About Death Takes Veteran Pike School Man
Death claimed one of Pike County well known retired educators and farmer at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 27, when Albert G. Shy, 69, of Rt. 1,Waverly, succumbed at his residence. Mr. Shy had been in declining health for several years.
A native of Pike County he was born on December 10, 1899. A son of Herman and Mary M. (Slavens) Shy.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mae (Barger) Shy, at home; three sisters, Miss Harriett Shy of Rt.1 Waverly, Mrs. Ann S. ____ of San Diego, Calif. and Mrs. R. J. Bess of Winter Haven, Va.; and a brother, Malcolm Shy of Rt 1 Waverly.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and a graduate of Piketon High School [1919].
Mr. Shy also attended Otterbein College, Ohio University and graduated from Wilmington College.
His first teaching assignment was as principal of the Kelly’s ____ High School in the Great Lakes area, where he served for four years. Returning to Pike County he served as Supervising Principal of the Beaver and Stockdale schools for several years and later was on the faculty of the Scioto Valley Schools until ill health caused his retirement. Mr. Shy was also a past president of the Pike County Teachers Association. In addition to his education activities, for many years he assisted his parents in Agricultural and dairy farming. He was recognized as one of the county’s leading educators.
Funeral services held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 30 at the Hammerstein Funeral Home in Beaver with Rev. Waid C. Radford officiating. Interment followed in Mound Cemetery at Piketon. Friends called at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Saturday until the funeral hour.
