About Dr. Melvin Kelton Farmer, 47, a well-known native of Piketon, succumbed at 4 p.m., Friday, at his home in East Lansing, Michigan, after an extended illness.
For the past several years, Dr. Farmer was with the Department of Humanities at Michigan University. Born in Piketon on July 5, 1907, he was the son of William E. and Lottie Foster Farmer. He graduated from Piketon High School, class of 1926, and then taught in the school system.
Later, Dr. Farmer received a Bachelor of Science and Masters Degree at Ohio State University. In 1936, at the age of 20, he received a Doctor of Philosophy at that university and was one of the youngest to attain that honor.
His teaching career took him to Thornville, Ohio, Montana State Teacher's College, and during World War 11 was associated with the history department at Ohio State. For several summers, he also taught at the Ohio State summer courses.
He united in marriage in 1935 to Wilma Gruber, of Columbus, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, Michael and Jeffrey, at home, and a sister, Mrs. Virginia Guth, of Columbus, and four uncles, Wells A. Foster, Arthur V. Farmer, **Bronson Farmer and Winn Farmer, all of Piketon. He is buried in Mound Cemetery in Piketon.
