Gene lived his Life just like he played ball; throwing a fast pitch. Gene started playing softball while attending Beaver Eastern High School in Beaver, Ohio, in the 1950's. Gene was approached by a local scout to try out for the Cincinnati Reds. Instead of attending additional Red's camps, he decided to allow his love for the game to lead him to Santa Ana, California to pursue a professional career. He played for the Gene Autry's Team and farm team in Fullerton, California. After six years he decided to move back to Waverly, Ohio and continued to be actively involved with slow pitch softball and as a referee for the Ohio High School Association Basketball. For over 35 years his passion for the game led him to become an honorable inductee into the Softball Association's Legends Hall of Fame in June, 2012, for a "lifetime of contributions to the game". Gene was a member of the New Covenant Church of Waverly, Ohio. He was retired from Martin Marietta Enrichment Plant, Piketon, Ohio with 25 years of service.
