About James Cutler Carthel, age 73, died at 3:15 p.m. Monday in Mesa, Ariz. He graduated from Piketon High School in 1941 and served six years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0026 and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 741097. Born Aug. 22, 1923 to John William and Olive Opal Cutler Carthel in Piketon. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lisanna LeMaster Carthel. He is survived by son, Mr. James R. Carthel of Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Claudia Sue) Crew of Columbus; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and one brother, Mr. John W. Carthel of Great Falls, Mont.; two sisters, Mrs. Donald (Christine A.) Woodlan of Painesville, Ohio and (twin) Mary K. Carthel Crabtree of Mesa, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends at the Plymouth Retirement Center in Winter Park, Fla. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Mound Cemetery in Piketon with Rev. Donovan Humble officiating. Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Merritt Post 142. Arrangements are under the direction of Howe Wheeler Boyer Hornback Funeral Home Piketon.
